The Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show returns to Birmingham’s NEC from the 18 – 23 February 2020. Brand new for 2020 is Electric in Motion, an innovative area where visitors can ride in style on some of the most cutting-edge electric ride-ons.
Electric in Motion is an area where kids and adults alike will have the chance to ride electric bikes (e-bikes), electric balance bikes for children (which you can start riding from just 2 – 7 years old), e-scooters, e-skateboards and even unicycles. Manufacturers such as Ride and Glide, RooDog and Ribble Cycles will provide demos before giving visitors the chance to take them for a spin on a special indoor course.
Ribble will have a selection of e-bikes on display, which are an excellent choice for beginner cyclists, those looking to take up cycling again or looking to prolong their cycling career. They are also a viable proposition for anyone wanting a more leisurely commute into work. Starting from £1899, Ribble e-bikes have one of the best propulsion systems and the lightest range of e-bikes available.
Ribble’s bikes utilise the minimalist ebikemotion X35 propulsion system. This lightweight system has a motor built into the rear hub and the battery is hidden within the downtube. In terms of ride and performance it feels just like any normal bicycle, and visitors to the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show can give this a try for themselves. Where it differs, however, is in the power assistance that it offers. At the push of a button, mounted on the top tube, riders have access to three levels of power assistance: Level 1 offers the least amount of assistance and Level 3 the highest so the rider can make adjustments to suit the terrain or to save battery power.
Yorkshire-based business, RooDog, will likewise be displaying a whole host of safety gear and e-bikes (starting from £1099). Most e-bikes use a pedal-assisted motor system and when activated, the motor provides an extra boost to the rider’s pedal stroke. Several studies have concluded that the use of pedelecs (i.e. e-bikes that assist with pedalling) still counts as moderate exercise. Plus, e-bikes make an eco-friendly choice of transport in comparison to a moped, motorbike or a car - as comparably the amount of energy used is very small. For example, the RooDog 36V 10Ah lithium batteries, on average, consume energy at a rate of 100 to 150 Watts -which is the same amount of energy it takes to run a 100W light bulb for an evening – and can power one of RooDog’s e-bikes for 30-45 miles.
65% of people in a recent survey stated that they were unsure just how e-bikes operated so the Electric in Motion area will be the perfect chance for visitors to the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show to have a go and learn more. The exhibitors will be there to debunk certain myths, e.g. riders do not need a licence for an e-bike; bikes are tax free; give out zero emissions; charge from household mains power sockets (rather than specific charging points like cars); and are fully waterproof. The government have also recently lent their aid to making e-bikes more accessible, thanks to some welcome changes to the cycle to work scheme to include the cost of e-bikes.
If bikes are not your thing, Ride and Glide will be displaying some of their e-skateboards at the Electric in Motion area, as well as e-scooters, which start from as little as £350, ‘onewheels’, from £1005, as well as e-bikes and children’s balance bikes too. In a time when it is looking very likely that electric scooters will be legalised on roads and cycle lanes in the UK in the near future (under government plans to encourage green transport, ministers are expected to launch a consultation next month), the Electric in Motion area will give those interested a chance to try before they buy!
